A house with a past
The Knole was built in the 1870s as a private mansion, designed by John Dando Sedding for Edmund Christy, whose family fortune came from the hat and towel trades. The Freemasons took it on in the 1950s and kept the oak panelling, stone fireplaces and fine plaster ceilings.
Set into the north wall is a carved stone panel showing the Vision of St Hubert: a huntsman who found a glowing cross between the antlers of a stag and gave up the chase for a better life.
